Why salaries climbed
Three forces drove Nepali tech salary inflation 2022-2026: (1) remote work uncoupled Nepali engineers from local-market salary anchors — same engineer earned 2-3x by working for a US / EU company remotely; (2) Indian outsourcing firms targeting Nepali engineers as cheaper alternative to Bangalore / Pune, raising the floor; (3) genuine local company growth, particularly in fintech and AI, increasing local demand. Non-salary compensation
- Equity / ESOPs — increasingly common in Nepali startups; smaller cap-table than US norms (typically 0.1-1% for senior hires)
- Remote work flexibility — strong differentiator; many candidates prioritise it over an extra NPR 10-20k/month

How fast are Nepali tech salaries growing?
Senior salaries grew ~15-30% annually 2022-2025 driven by foreign-remote competition. Junior salaries grew slower (~5-10%) due to growing supply from CS programs. 2025-2026 senior growth has moderated; mid-level catching up.
Is there a gender gap?
Yes — Nepali tech is heavily male-skewed at senior levels. Compensation gap exists but is smaller than representation gap. Targeted hiring + retention of women engineers is the bigger problem; pay equity at-grade is largely addressed at top employers.
What about contractors / freelancers?
Hourly rates roughly equivalent to full-time / 1500 hrs annually divided by hourly rate. Add 20-30% premium for freelancer benefits-replacement and contract risk. Senior contractor in Nepal: NPR 1,500-4,000/hr.

How does Nepali salary inflation compare to other South Asian markets?
Bangalore / Hyderabad have inflated faster on absolute terms (2x in 3 years for senior engineers); Nepal is catching up from a lower base. Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh have lagged behind Nepal as remote work demand has favoured the Indian-subcontinent talent that speaks English most fluently.
Will the AI hype cool salaries?
No near-term sign. Specialist AI engineers continue to be undersupplied globally; Nepali engineers with real AI / ML production experience can earn near-parity with mid-tier US salaries.
